The History of the Pe Clan

Our Ancestral Roots

The Pe family, known in Chinese as 白 (Bai) and pronounced Peh in Hokkien, traces its ancestral roots to Pangtou Village (榜頭村) in Anxi County, Fujian Province, China.

For centuries, Chinese families maintained strong traditions of clan organization and genealogical record keeping. Through carefully preserved genealogy books, the names of ancestors and their descendants were recorded from generation to generation. These records not only preserved family lineage but also strengthened the sense of identity and unity among members of the clan.

In Pangtou Village, the Bai Clan Grand Ancestral Hall (榜頭白氏大宗祠) served as the central gathering place of the clan. Within the ancestral hall, tablets honoring the forefathers were enshrined, and family members gathered to commemorate their ancestors and maintain the traditions of the clan.

Migration from Fujian to the Philippines

Beginning in the nineteenth century, many residents of Fujian Province migrated overseas in search of better economic opportunities. Southeast Asia became a destination for many Chinese migrants because of its growing trade networks and established Chinese communities.

Among the early pioneers of the Pe clan who journeyed abroad was Ying Shun (應順), recognized as one of the earliest ancestors whose descendants established the Pe family lineage in the Philippines. Ying Shun is documented in the China genealogy book (generations 14–21), serving as the bridge between the authoritative genealogical records and the Philippine diaspora.

Travel during this period involved great uncertainty and hardship. Nevertheless, migrants from Fujian demonstrated remarkable resilience as they established businesses and communities in their new homeland.

Through hard work and perseverance, the descendants of Ying Shun gradually expanded across the Philippines, building families and contributing to the development of commerce and society.

Growth of the Pe Clan in the Philippines

Over the generations, the Pe clan grew into a large extended family with branches throughout the Philippines.

Members of the clan have contributed to many fields including:

  • Commerce and entrepreneurship - Building businesses and supporting economic growth
  • Education and professional services - Contributing to knowledge and expertise
  • Community leadership - Guiding and supporting their communities
  • Philanthropy and civic involvement - Giving back and strengthening society

Despite being spread across different regions and professions, members of the Pe clan continue to share a strong sense of family identity rooted in their common ancestry.

Preserving the Legacy of the Pe Clan

As the Pe family continued to grow, the importance of preserving the clan's history and strengthening connections among relatives became increasingly clear.

To fulfill this purpose, the Pe Grand Family Association of the Philippines, Inc. was established to unite members of the clan and preserve the heritage passed down through generations.

The association promotes:

  • Fellowship among clan members - Strengthening bonds through gatherings and events
  • Preservation of genealogy and historical records - Documenting our family story
  • Cultural heritage and ancestral traditions - Honoring our roots and customs
  • Reunions and gatherings of the extended family - Creating opportunities for connection

By documenting our history and maintaining close relationships among relatives, the Pe clan continues to honor the legacy of its ancestors while building a strong foundation for future generations.
